Ambrose Bierce’s classic Civil War tale of terror and suspense contains a surprise twist that has often been imitated, but never surpassed.

Bierce himself served as a lieutenant of the Union Army in Alabama during the war, and saw action at the Battle of Corinth, which is mentioned in the narrative.
