Despite – or perhaps because of – its brevity, this short piece by Ernest Hemingway, first published in his collection In Our Time in 1924, is one of his most expressive works ever. It is a textbook example of the author’s “iceberg theory” of literature, and I think it says as much as a 500-page novel. Who needs Reader’s Digest when we’ve got Hemingway…?
