The Story of the Unknown Church, by William Morris

The poet, artist, designer, publisher and social activist William Morris both revived and single-handedly created an image of the past that still lives with us in design and architecture, as well as in the realm of fantasy art and literature. This dreamlike tale, first published in The Oxford and Cambridge Magazine in 1856, reflects Morris’s journey to northern France and Belgium with the company of the pre-Raphaelite artist Edward Burne-Jones in 1854. It captures his neo-medieval aesthetics in exemplary fashion.
