Revenge is Sour, by George Orwell

Revenge, according to an old saying, is a dish best served cold. In fact, it may also taste so sour as to be entirely inedible. It seems to me that George Orwell’s insight, born of cruel experience in European wars, as expressed in tonight’s essay should be a common one. But we rarely hear about it – although we ignore it at our peril.

First published in 1945.
