Most of Kate Chopin’s stories have a tragic vein running through them, so it’s a relief to find a work of hers with a touch of comedy – where one of her heroines can dish it out as well as she can endure it herself. If this story is representative at all of old Southern morals, then Scarlett O’Hara was not the only calculating young belle on the make back then.
