Tourism is always a mixed bag for local communities. The benefits they gain in some areas – particularly in the hotel and restaurant business, along with entertainment revenues and income from local attractions and tours – often fail to offset a net loss when it comes to the community’s cultural integrity and sense of self. The type of tourism described in tonight’s story is rare in the northern latitudes, but it isn’t all that far off from some of the goings-on I’ve witnessed in Egypt and East Africa. Chances are, if we saw this sort of thing happening in our own towns and among our own young people, we’d be as concerned as our neighbours to the south have been all this time – and with good reason.
