Smile, Mannequin, Smile, by Courttia Newland

I recently watched the restored version of the film Metropolis from 1927, complete with rediscovered scenes rescued from a Buenos Aires film archive, and became intrigued by cinematic and also literary depictions of the creation of new life from inanimate matter. I suppose there’s a downright genre devoted to this sort of thing – it would certainly include the Golem, Frankenstein and Goethe’s “Sorcerer’s Apprentice” – and tonight’s unsettling story fits nicely into this tradition.
