I think we’ve all experienced this kind of story in our own lives. The minimalist version goes like this: “Fish or cut bait.” Although this story is minimalist enough, a nice example of Hemingway’s “iceberg theory,” i.e. that in taut, unadorned prose “your reader will see only what is above the water—but the knowledge that you have about your character that never makes it into the story acts as the bulk of the iceberg. And that is what gives your story weight and gravitas” (according to Jenna Blum in her book The Author at Work). Now I never knew there were icebergs in Jerusalem, but tonight’s story has put me straight about that.
